Ideas?

i saw this today:

Far be it to quote from the egregious Eleanor Roosevelt, but on the principle that even a women who looks like a monkey will eventually tap out a worthy sentence if she sits at the keyboard long enough, I will.

it described exactly what has been bothering me lately - i've got noone to talk to! during the past month, i've noticed that while spending time with people i begin to get anxious and then agitated. i figured out what's causing it: anecdotes. tale upon tale about mundane events in another person's life - minutia so inconsequential that i wouldn't even take notice if it happened to me. petty bitching about bad people, dumb people, ugly people, mean people. and heaven forbid my eyes glaze over, for then i am accused of "not paying attention."

i wish there were a universal code for "i couldn't possibly care less...next topic?"

Ash you are too polite. These people, myself encluded sometimes...I am shamed to admit, need waking from this fuge state that has encompassed there universe. A sharp, metaphorical or not, kick to the head is what some of us need on occasion. So if you ever hear me start a conversation "This dumbass at work..." feel free to slap me about the head and shoulders with much abandon. :)

i think the universal code for "i couldn't care less" is saying "i couldn't care less." learn how to use those words and use them often.

alex, you are absolutely right, and being straightforward is really the only way to handle things. but i don't know that i can be that direct...it seems that with people i don't know that well i just kind of begin to avoid them, and with people i know well i don't want to be hurtful in that way. everyone is so sensitive these days.
