Anniversary

i was reading about how some people are planning to recognize september 11 and i started thinking about what significance it will have for me. i'm not really sure. i didn't like the way people acted after it happened, and so i won't be surprised if the way they act on the anniversary bothers me, also. to me the important thing about the september 11 attacks are that they took away some of the magic from my life, and that affects me every day. i don't get to wait until the anniversary to remember it.

i was thinking about why the death of many might be more tragic to me than the death of a few, and i don't think there is any reason. the people who died didn't do anything to deserve to die, but for the most part they didn't do anything to deserve to be called heroes, either. my concern is for the attack on our freedoms, and as far as i am concerned, those have continued since september 11. if we are going to start commemorating anniversaries we are going to have a busy year.

I wouldn't call most of those people who died heros. Firefighters, rescueworkers, yes, but not the people that were just in the towers. Yes, it was still unfortunate and sad. However, while recognizing it is one thing. I don't think there should be parades and memorial concerts. Put that to bed. To me that's like celebrating something that shouldn't be celebrated.

The consistency of the governments actions to errode your freedoms are what's worrying me. Seems every week or so there's cheney or bush or some other suit advocating more and more invasions into privacy. It's a nasty concerted assault, and I'm not feeling any swell of anger here against it. I'm far from an impartial observer but once again I find myself in the US at an exciting time. I hope the poignancy of the moment is not drowned in an orgy of red white and blue and irrelevant noise.

I can't believe we are commemorating it at all myself. Why do we want to remember it unless we are trying to refuel an anger towards something? I think it should fade away so we can move on as a country, not blinded into yet another war that needlessly kills more of our innocents. In life, you are never standing. You are either forward or backwards. I feel as though all this effort to re-live a tragedy is not moving forward at all.
